It isn’t downhill snow skiing, martial arts, or SCUBA diving, but Dr. Brad Weir is still excited about joining CIMRO as its new chief medical officer.
In addition to those adrenaline-fueled hobbies – a goal is to climb Pike’s Peak – Weir’s medical background is in emergency medicine and EMS. In addition to work as an ED physician at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL, he serves as its EMS medical director and associate quality officer. He also is an EM educator with the University of Illinois/Carle Illinois College of Medicine, and associate clinical professor at the college of medicine.
Weir sees his new role with CIMRO as one providing patient advocacy through reviews – improving the care patients get, and improving the care clients give.
“I want to help patients get and clients give the best care they can,” Weir said.
As Carle associate quality officer, Weir performs mortality reviews, works toward performance improvements, and serves on a best-practice committee. He also chairs the pharmacology and therapeutics committee for Carle Foundation Hospital and Carle Health.
Weir, 48, grew up in St. Charles, IL, but has spent a lot of time in and around Champaign-Urbana. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign – he first got interested in EMS as an undergrad, and eventually rose to the rank of EMS instructor – and the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He and his wife, Michelle, live in Mahomet, IL. Their family includes five children, ages 8 to 21.
In addition to his extensive list of roles at Carle, Weir has earned the respect of colleagues, including Dr. Audra Thomas, his predecessor at CIMRO.
“I have known Dr. Weir for 13 years and know him to be a man of integrity, committed to excellence and quality in medicine,” Thomas said. “He is able to combine quality with compassion in his everyday encounters with patients. I have no doubt of his ability to be an excellent chief medical officer for CIMRO.”
